ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ted Hughes

Edward J. Hughes was born in 1930 in Mytholmroyd, England, and is one of the most controversial literary figures of his time. In 1984, he received the title of Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom and, in 1998, the "Whitebread Prize".
He studied at Cambridge University, beginning to publish his poems in literary magazines and newspapers. In 1956, he met the American poet Sylvia Plath, whom he would marry in June of that year.
In 1957, his first book of poems, "The Hawk in the Rain," was published, followed by further books such as "Under a North Star" (1981), "Wolfwatching" (1990), "Selected Poems 1957-1981," and children's books such as "Remains of Elmet" (1979). From 1965, Hughes was co-editor of the London magazine "Modern Poetry in Translation."
His divorce from Sylvia Plath, and her suicide and that of his second wife, are controversial biographical themes in Ted Hughes' life. The author died of cancer in October 1998.
