William Golding
PRÉMIO NOBEL DA LITERATURA 1983
Escritor inglês, William Gerald Golding nasceu a 19 de setembro de 1911 na pequena aldeia de St. Columb Minor, na Cornualha. Filho de um professor primário de fortes entusiasmos políticos e de uma ativista dos direitos das mulheres, começou a escrever precocemente, com apenas sete anos de idade.
Após ter concluído os seus estudos secundários na Marlborough Grammar School, ingressou no Brasenose College da Universidade de Oxford, com o intuito de cumprir o desejo paterno e versar Ciências da Natureza. Não obstante, ao fim de dois anos encontrou forças para seguir a sua verdadeira vocação e pediu transferência para Literatura Inglesa.
Em 1934, ainda estudante, publicou o seu primeiro livro, uma compilação de poemas intitulada Poems. No ano de 1939 mudou-se para Salisbury, onde passou a lecionar Inglês na Bishop Wordsworth's School.
Em consequência da deflagração da Segunda Guerra Mundial alistou-se na Real Armada Britânica, ascendendo pouco tempo depois ao posto de comandante de um torpedeiro. Presenciou o afundamento do couraçado alemão Bismarck e o desembarque na Normandia.
Finda a guerra, Golding retomou o ensino e a sua grande ambição, a escrita. Em 1954 publicou o seu primeiro romance, Lord Of The Flies (O Senhor das Moscas), que se tornou num sucesso de vendas imediato e internacional. A obra recria acontecimentos que decorreriam num futuro próximo, e conta a história de um grupo de crianças, após terem sido evacuadas de Inglaterra por causa de uma guerra nuclear, sobrevivem ao despenhamento do avião em que seguiam, e que mata todos os adultos. Chegando a uma ilha de coral, formam a sua própria sociedade, que começa por ser solidária e justa, para se ir tornando gradualmente numa autêntica anarquia.
Seguiram-se, entre outros volumes, The Inheritors (1955), obra que remete à destruição dos homens de Neanderthal pelos Cro-Magnon, Free Fall (1959), The Spire (1964), retrato lúcido da monomania humana, Darkness Visible (1979) e Rites Of Passage (1980, Ritos de Passagem).
Investido cavaleiro em 1988, William Golding foi vencedor de inúmeros prémios, entre os quais o prestigiado Nobel da Literatura, em 1983.
Faleceu em Perranarworthal a 19 de junho de 1993.
