ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Iceberg Slim

Iceberg Slim (1918-1992) is the pseudonym of Robert Lee Maupin, also known as Robert Beck. Having begun his life as a pimp, after false starts as a shoeshine boy, brilliant college student, alcohol dealer, and con man, he decided to narrate his survival and achievement of independence on the streets of a brutal and treacherous Chicago, even for the most prepared. His descriptions of his experiences on the streets and in prisons had a considerable influence on African-American culture, which owes him much of the language he captured from the streets, or even created to complement his assertive personality. Iceberg Slim greatly influenced artists. hip-hop and rapperslike Ice-T and Ice Cube.
