This book recalls a version of Lisbon that has partly disappeared, one that triggered a process towards a more cosmopolitan city in the late 1980s. This is the Lisbon of cheap taverns and casas de pasto, of historical cinemas closing down, of the beginning of nightlife in Bairro Alto, of freedom inside the legendary Frágil bar, of Portuguese rock bands, of successful and failed chance meetings in the era of phone booths, of the great fire in Chiado, of the last tailors, of the first urban reconstructions that surgically preserved only the façades of buildings. Here, Daniel Blaufuks records a poetic Lisbon, which was always present in his camera’s viewfinder.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Daniel Blaufuks
Daniel Blaufuks nasceu em Lisboa em 1963, numa família de refugiados judeus alemães. A sua formação dividiu-se entre a AR.CO, Lisboa, o Royal College of Arts, Londres, e a Watermill Foundation, Nova Iorque. Fotógrafo, cineasta e artista plástico, tem trabalhado na relação entre fotografia e literatura, através de obras como My Tangier, com o escritor Paul Bowles. Mais recentemente, Collected Short Stories apresentou vários dípticos fotográficos, numa espécie de «prosa de instantâneos». A relação entre o público e o privado, a memória individual e a memória coletiva tem sido, aliás, uma das constantes interrogações no seu trabalho. Utiliza principalmente a fotografia e o vídeo, apresentando o resultado através de livros, instalações e filmes. O documentário «Sob Céus Estranhos» tem sido apresentado regularmente por todo o mundo, nomeadamente no PhotoEspaña (Madrid), onde o livro «Sob Céus Estranhos» recebeu o prémio de melhor edição internacional do ano de 2007. Neste mesmo ano foi galardoado com o Prémio BES Photo. É diretor de imagem da revista literária Granta em Língua Portuguesa, responsável pela escolha dos fotógrafos de cada nova edição.
