ABOUT THE AUTHOR

James Salter

James Salter was born in New York on June 10, 1925. A pilot in the U.S. Air Force, he left his military career in 1957, a year after the publication of his first novel. The Hunters, with which he immediately captured the attention of critics. He went on to work in film, where he was a screenwriter and director, before dedicating himself exclusively to writing, which he has done since 1979. His novels include... A Sport and a Pastime (1967) and Solo Faces (1979), the memoirs Burning the Days (1997) and Gods of Tin (2004), as well as the volume of short stories Dusk and Other Stories, published in 1988 and awarded the PEN/Faulkner Prize the following year. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 2000, he was honored in 2010 with the Rea Award for the Short Story and in 2012 with the PEN/Malamud Prize. His latest novel, Everything That Matters, published by Livros do Brasil in 2015, marked his debut in Portugal. He passed away on June 19, 2015.
