ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Colette

Sidonie Gabrielle Colette was born in 1873 in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye. At the age of twenty, she married Gauthier-Villars, an author of popular novels better known by the name of Willy, and moved to Paris. She began to write her first book, Claudine à L'École, which, after being corrected by her husband, appeared in 1900 with only his name. Taking advantage of the enormous success obtained, Willy leads Colette to write five more novels, which will be published as the first, without the author's name appearing. In 1906, the Willys divorced and Colette, in order to survive, became a music-hall artist, but without ceasing to write. It is this experience that will be used in La Vagabonde (1911).
In 1912, she married Henri de Juvenel, a writer and statesman, with whom she lived until 1924. In 1935, he married Maurice Goudeket for the third time. In the meantime, she continues to publish her books, which have established her as the first French writer of our days. Chéri (1920), Le Blé en Herbe (1923), The End of Chéri (1926), La Chatte (1933) and Gigi (1943) are his true masterpieces.
