SYNOPSIS
1801. Un homme né dans un port de Macédoine, petit négociant en tabac, ne sachant ni lire ni écrire, débarque dans la vallée du Nil. Se hissant à la tête de l'Égypte, il devient en quatre ans, quelque trente siècles après Ramsès II, le dernier pharaon. Maître absolu, il réalise l'impossible, crée un empire qui s'étend du golfe Persique au désert de Lybie, du Soudan à la Méditerranée, se rapprochant ainsi des nues où trône son idole : Napoléon Bonaparte. Il fonde des écoles, des hôpitaux, un arsenal, des industries, la plus puissante armée de l'Orient , dote l'Égypte de plus de cent soixante kilomètres de canaux, fait planter plus de cent mille pieds d'oliviers et dix millions de mûriers aux frontières du désert.
C'est ce dernier pharaon - celui à qui la France doit l'obélisque de la Concorde - que Gilbert Sinoué fait revivre sous nos yeux, avec la rigueur de l'historien et le talent du conteur.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Gilbert Sinoué
Gilbert Sinoué, son of an Egyptian father and a Greek mother, was born in Egypt in 1947, a country he left at the age of 18 after his studies with the Jesuits.
Decidedly multifaceted, he worked for a French-language newspaper, experimented with painting, met Brel, left for Beirut, arrived in Paris in 1968, frequented the cabarets of the Left Bank, recorded albums, and gave guitar lessons.
Author-composer-performer, he will even participate in a festival in Spa. However, he needs to write. A first manuscript cannot find a publisher. But he persists, and rightly so: La Pourpre et l'olivier It appeared in 1987 and won a prize for Historical Fiction. It has also been published in Portugal by Difel. The Book of Sapphire (awarded the Prix des Libraires), Avicenna or the Road to Isfahan, The Boy from Bruges and Akhenaten, The Accursed God.
