ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Tim Mackintosh-Smith

He studied Classical Arabic at Oxford. At the age of twenty-one, and like Ibn Battutah, he set off for the East, to find the real Arabia. For the past seventeen years, when not traveling, he has lived in Yemen's capital, Sana'a—a place spared many of the most horrific aspects of the post-medieval period. His first book, Yemen: Travels in Dictionary Land, won the 1988 Thomas Cook/Daily Telegraph Travel Literature Award. It has since been translated into Flemish, Arabic, and Chinese.
