ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sinclair Lewis

NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE 1930

American novelist and critic, born on February 7, 1885, in Minnesota, and died on January 10, 1951, in Rome. In 1902 he went to study at Oberlin Academy but eventually moved to Yale University, where he graduated in 1908. In the meantime, he participated in the Yale Literary Magazine. After his studies, he worked in advertising, but he did not stop dedicating himself to writing, an activity to which he later dedicated himself full time. He was the first writer from his country to be awarded a Nobel Prize, in 1930. The award consecrated a literary work representative of American life. Main Street (1920), Babbitt (1922), Arrowsmith (1925), Elmer Gantry (1927), and Dodsworth (1929) are the most prominent works.
