Francesco Petrarca nasceu em Arezzo, na Toscânia, em 1304, e morreu aos 70 anos em Arquà, perto de Pádua, no Veneto. Pai do humanismo italiano, filósofo e filólogo, poeta – são-lhe também atribuídas a «invenção» do soneto, bem como as bases do italiano literário moderno.
