Illustrious Exile

In 1786, Scottish poet Robert Burns, penniless and desperate, accepted the position of overseer in Jamaica. He went to the Dutch colony of Demerara, a world of sugar and slavery. This novel deals with the Caribbean landscape and provides imaginative insights into how Burns, as a man of his times, might have responded to slavery.
