Famously inspiring the iconic 1939 Oscar-winning film starring Vivien Leigh as Scarlett and Clark Gable as the rakish but cynical Rhett Butler, it is Margaret Mitchell's only published novel, and a living testament to the irrepressible resilience of the American spirit.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Margaret Mitchell

Margaret Mitchell was born on November 8, 1900, in Atlanta, Georgia. She grew up in a prosperous and politically active family. Despite her early passion for writing, Mitchell initially pursued a career in journalism.

She worked as a reporter at the Atlanta Journal, where she honed her storytelling skills and developed a deep understanding of Southern culture and history, which would later influence her work.

In 1926, an ankle injury confined Mitchell to her home, giving her the time and motivation to begin writing her masterpiece. Over the next decade, she meticulously researched and crafted it. "And the wind took it all away.".

Despite her immense success, Mitchell remained a private person, away from the public eye. She never published another novel, focusing instead on philanthropy and supporting various charitable causes.

Tragically, Mitchell's life was cut short when she was struck by a car and died on August 16, 1949, at the age of 48.
