Le film raconte l'histoire de Hans (Harry Earles), un «nain» de cirque, qui délaisse sa fiancée Frieda (Daisy Earles) pour une «grande femme», la très voluptueuse trapéziste Cléopâtre, dit Cléo (Olga Baclonova). Apprenant que Hans a hérité d'une fortune, Cléo conspire alors avec son amant Hercule (Henry Victor), le colosse du cirque, pour épouser Hans en vue de l'empoisonner, et ainsi hériter de sa fortune... «And now, folks, if you'll just step this way, you are about to witness the most amazing, the most astounding, living monstrosity of all time.» Freaks. The movie tells the story of Hans (Harry Earles), a circus «midget» who forsakes his fiancé Frieda (Daisy Earles) for a «big woman»-the meretricious trapeze aerialist Cleopatra (Olga Baclonova). When «Cleo» learns that Hans has come into a fortune, she conspires with her lover Hercules (Henry Victor), the circus strongman, to marry Hans and poison him in order to inherit his riches...
