Liburu honetako protagonista, Guy Montag, suhiltzailea da. 451 zenbakidun kaskoa buruan, letoizko mangera-muturra ukabiletan, liburuak erretzea da bere lana, bere behar kuttuna. Izan ere, Montag bizi den herrialdean debekatuta dago irakurtzea. Irakurtzeak pentsatzea dakarrelako eta pentsatzeak zoriontasun eza. Eta zoriontsua izatea derrigorrezkoa da. Dena aldatuko da, ostera, familia antisozial bateko kide den Clarisse gaztea ezagutzen duenean. Harreman berriak inarrosirik, erreketa batean liburu bat ezkutatu eta irakurtzeari ekingo dio suhiltzaileak, bera ere antisozial bihurtuz. Macartismo garaian idatzia eta orduan sortu berria zen Playboy aldizkarian atalka argitaratua, XX. mendeko distopiarik ezagunetako bat da Fahrenheit 451, alienatzen doan gizartea esnatzeko aldarri sutsua. «Estatu Batuetan gertatzen ari zenaz kezkatuta idatzi nuen liburu hau. Bere itzalari ere beldur zion jende askok orduan; liburuak erretzen hasiko zirenaren mehatxua zegoen. Liburu asko apaletatik erretiratzen hasiak ziren» (Ray Bradbury).
