ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mário Ventura

Mário Ventura is the author of a vast literary work. He published his first book, The Night of Shame, in 1963, followed by In the Shadow of Dead Trees (1966) and of The Spoils of Fools (1968). He compiled narratives about various regions of the country into two books: Disenchanted Alentejo (1969) and To die in Portugal (1976).
He returned to the novel in 1979, with Another Time, Another City, followed by his most acclaimed book by both the public and critics, Life and Death of the Santiagos (1985), awarded by the Pen Club and the Municipality of Lisbon. His most controversial work, March Disagreement, appeared in 1987, followed by the novel Évora and the Days of War (1992), with which he won the Portuguese Pen Club Award for the second time.
Notícias began publishing his works with the novel The Revolt of the Heirs (1997). Later, he edited Waxing Crescent, a memoir, the album Portugal - Geography of Fatalism, Crossing the Desert and in 2005, The Enchanted Kingdom.
