ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Wallace Stevens

Wallace Stevens was born on October 2, 1879, into an upper-middle-class family in the state of Pennsylvania. Although he studied law at Harvard and New York Law School, he worked as an administrator for an insurance company in Hartford for most of his life.
Although he was always respected in modernist circles, authors such as e.e. cummings, Marianne Moore, and William Carlos Williams considered him the typical bourgeois, rejecting his lifestyle.
His works include, in addition to books of poetry, two plays and a collection of lectures, "The Necessary Angel," an essential book in his oeuvre.
Proof of the importance of Wallace Stevens' poetic work, if one were needed, would be the awarding of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1955. He died in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1955.
