ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Antonio Spadaro

Antonio Spadaro (Messina, July 6, 1966) is an Italian Jesuit priest, writer, and theologian, editor of the magazine Catholic Civilization.

He graduated in philosophy in 1988 from the University of Messina, shortly after entering the novitiate of the Society of Jesus. On December 21, 1996, he was ordained a priest, and on May 24, 2007, he took his solemn vows in the Society of Jesus. He obtained a degree in Fundamental Theology, a master's degree in Social Communication, and a doctorate in Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He completed his formation in the United States, in the Jesuit Province in Chicago, between 2002 and 2003.

In 1994, she began writing for the magazine. Catholic CivilizationIn 1998, he definitively joined the editorial team. He specializes in literary criticism, especially of contemporary Italian authors (Cesare Pavese, Alda Merini, Giorgio Bassani, Mario Luzi, Pier Vittorio Tondelli, ...) and American writers (from classic authors like Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson, to Flannery O'Connor, Jack London, and more contemporary authors like Jack Kerouac, Raymond Carver, among others). He is a literary theorist. He also discusses music (Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Nick Drake, Nick Cave, ...), art (Mark Rothko, Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, Basquiat, ...), films, and how new communication technologies impact the way we think and live (especially Wikipedia, Second Life, digital reading, social networks, hacker philosophy, cybertheology...).

In 1998, he founded Letter Bomb, a cultural project that coordinates creative writing, video production, and reading initiatives online, with the participation of authors from various Italian cities. He is the editor of the poetry series. L'Oblò delle edizioni AncoraSince 2002, he has taught at the Interdisciplinary Center for Social Communication (CICS) of the Pontifical Gregorian University. In 2008, he became head of the Scientific Committee. "La sfida e l'esperienza", which brings together teachers and managers interested in issues of spirituality and innovation. From 2004 to 2009, she was responsible for coordinating the cultural activities of the Society of Jesus in Italy.

In September 2009, he became rector of the Jesuit community of the magazine. Catholic CivilizationOn September 6, 2011, his appointment as editor of the magazine was announced. In the October 1, 2011 issue, the magazine published an article in which he discussed his new role as editor.

Spadaro's online presence consists of social media accounts, a personal website, and two blogs, one dedicated to cybertheology and the other to the American writer Flannery O'Connor.
