ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Manuel Alegre

Manuel Alegre was born on May 12, 1936, in Águeda. He studied in Lisbon, Porto, and at the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra. He was a swimming champion and an actor at the University Theatre of Coimbra (TEUC).
In 1961 he was mobilized to Angola. Arrested by the PIDE (Portuguese secret police), he spent six months in the São Paulo Fortress in Luanda, where he wrote a large part of the poems in his first book. Song SquareIn October 1964, he was elected a member of the national committee of the National Liberation Patriotic Front and began working in Algiers, at the radio station. Voice of FreedomHe returned to Portugal after April 25, 1974.
A historic leader of the Socialist Party since 1974, he was vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic from 1995 to 2009, and a member of the Council of State.
His vast literary work, which includes novels, short stories, essays, but especially poetry, has been widely disseminated and acclaimed. He has been awarded the most distinguished literary prizes: the APE-CTT Grand Prize for Poetry, the AICL Literary Criticism Prize, the Fernando Namora Prize, and the Pessoa Prize in 1999. Regarding his book of poems... Twelve Ships He was awarded the D. Dinis Prize. In 2014, he received the Amália Prize from the Amália Rodrigues Foundation and, in 2016, the APE Literary Life Prize and the SPA Career Achievement Award. In the same year, the dst Grand Prize for Literature was awarded to his book of poems. West DistrictIn 2017, he was awarded the Camões Prize and, in 2019, the SPA Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2021, he received the António Ramos Rosa National Poetry Prize. My Memories He received the Miguel Torga APE/CM Grand Prize for Biographical Literature from Coimbra.
