Germano Silva was born in Penafiel in 1931, but moved with his family to Porto when he was just one year old. Here he grew up, studied, and worked his entire life.
It arrived at News Journal (JN) in 1956, as a sports contributor, and it was there that he became a journalist, having been, successively, intern, reporter-informant, reporter, writer and editor-in-chief.
He retired in 1996, but remains connected to JN. He continues to regularly organize guided tours of Porto – it's common to see him walking through the city streets followed by hundreds of people.
He was awarded the gold medal of merit by the Municipal Chambers of Porto and Penafiel. In 2015 he received a doctorate. Honoris Causa He graduated from the University of Porto and in 2017 was awarded the Order of Merit, Commander's degree, by the President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
In 2021, he donated a significant portion of the collection he had gathered over decades of work to the Porto Municipal Historical Archive, fulfilling one of his greatest pleasures: sharing knowledge so that historians, scholars, and curious individuals can also become, like him, lovers of their city.
