Leslie Stephen (1832-1904), the English author and literary critic, began researching what he later called his 'utilitarian bog' in the late 1870s, though this three-volume examination of English utilitarianism was not published until 1900. It examines the works of Jeremy Bentham, James Mill and John Stuart Mill.
