When the Irish artist and antiquarian George Petrie (1790-1866) died, this illustrated two-volume collection of almost 300 Irish-language inscriptions was edited by the archaeologist Margaret Stokes (1832-1900) and published in 1872-8. Each inscription is accompanied by notes on its subject, date, script, decoration and linguistic features.
