Anna Sewell (1820-1878) nasceu em Norfolk, Inglaterra. Incapacitada de andar viu-se obrigada a usar regularmente pequenas carruagens puxadas por cavalos, o que terá contribuído para o seu amor por este animal e alimentado a sua preocupação pelos maus-tratos nele infligidos. A sua obra O Cavalo Preto, hoje considerada um clássico da literatura juvenil, foi originalmente escrita para incutir compreensão e bondade às pessoas que lidam com cavalos.
