A knowledge of Heidegger's Sein und Zeit is essential for anyone who wishes to understand a great deal of recent continental work in theology as well as philosophy. Yet until this translation first appeared in 1962, this fundamental work of one of the most influential European thinkers of the century remained inaccessible to English readers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Martin Heidegger

Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), a German philosopher, was born in Messkirsh, a small Catholic town north of Lake Constance in Baden.
At the University of Freiburg, from 1909 to 1913, he studied Theology, Philosophy and Sciences.
His final dissertation was on The Doctrine of Judgment in Psychologism and demonstrates his interest in Husserl's Logical Investigations , of whom he was an assistant and friend and to whom he dedicated the writing of his most famous work, Being and Time, written in his small house in Todtnautberg, in the Black Forest, and published in 1927.
After succeeding Husserl as chair of Freiburg in 1933, when the Nazis seized power, he accepted the position of rector of the university, but resigned a year later.
His membership of the National Socialist party is the subject of controversy.
Suspended from his teaching duties in 1945 by the authorities of the occupying forces, he gave lectures.
Seeing his influence progressively increase, he was reinstated in 1951 and taught until 1957 as a retired professor.
