ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Gerry Adams

The president of Sinn Fein, he was born in Belfast in 1949. A member of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA), he participated in the IRA delegation that, in 1972, began secret negotiations with the British government. Imprisoned several times in the 1970s, he was a cellmate of Bobby Sands. Elected to Parliament for the Belfast constituency in 1983, he was unable to hold this seat for ten years because he was banned from residing in Great Britain.
