Malcolm Lowry was born in 1909 in northwest England, near Liverpool. He completed his studies at Cambridge in 1932 and spent the following years between London, Paris, New York, Mexico, and Los Angeles, eventually settling in 1939 in the Canadian province of British Columbia. A poet and novelist, he published only two books during his lifetime: in 1933 Ultramarine and in 1947 Beneath the Volcano, which is considered his greatest work and one of the most important novels of the 20th century. Malcolm Lowry had an intense and short life: he died in 1957 in the village of Ripe, Sussex, England, after ingesting an excessive amount of alcohol and pills.
