Victor D. O. Santos nasceu no Brasil, onde viveu até aos 25 anos. Esteve a viver na Alemanha e Países Baixos durante alguns anos, mas depois mudou-se para os EUA onde fez o doutoramento em linguística. Aqui assentou e aqui desenvolve o seu trabalho como linguista profissional e autor premiado de livros ilustrados. O O que nos torna humanos foi selecionado para o dPICTUS Unpublished Picture Book Showcase 4 de 2022, para o prestigiado catálogo White Ravens 2023 e para uma exposição especial durante a Feira do Livro Infantil de Bolonha de 2023. A UNESCO decidiu que este seria o livro infantil oficial da Década Internacional das Línguas Indígenas da UNESCO. Esta obra está traduzida em mais de 20 idiomas, com muitas das edições estrangeiras sendo copublicadas com a UNESCO.
