ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A. M. Pires Cabral

A.M. Pires Cabral was born in Chacim, Macedo de Cavaleiros, in 1941. He graduated in Germanic Philology. He was a teacher and cultural promoter, responsible for Vila Real's participation in the Council of Europe's Project 5.2 ("Cultural Policies in Cities") and co-organizer of the Camilian Days in Vila Real. He is known primarily as a fiction writer and poet.
In the field of fiction, he has published eight books of short stories and six novels to date, winning the Círculo de Leitores Prize (with Sancirilo), the Camilo Castelo Branco Short Story Grand Prize (with The Erymanthian Boar) and the DST Grand Prize for Literature (with The CanonBefore The Barracks, published the novel in this same collection Feliciano (2021).
In the field of poetry, he debuted in 1974 with Somewhere in the Northeast and has published 20 titles to date. He was awarded the D. Dinis Prize (with What Train Is This? and Douro: Pizzicato and Chula), Luís Miguel Nava Prize (with The Temples of Ash), PEN Club (with Plow), SPA Authors Award 2014 (with Bottom Drawer), João de Deus National Literary Prize 2021 (with Fire Fronts). Souvenir Booklet, his most recent book of poems, was awarded the António Gedeão Poetry Prize and the Ruy Belo Prize in 2022.
