ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Antonio Gramsci

He was born in Ales, Sardinia, on January 22, 1891. He studied at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Turin from 1911 and in 1913 he joined the Socialist Party. In 1921, in a context marked by the Great War, the Russian Revolution, and the occupation of factories in Turin, the Italian Communist Party was founded, of which Gramsci was a member of the first Central Committee. In 1924, after directing l'Ordine NuovoGramsci leads the UnityIn the same year he was elected to Parliament, in 1926, under the pretext of the "Zamboni attack," he was arrested. The Fascist Special Court, a recent creation of Mussolini's regime, tried him for "incitement to civil war," incitement to class hatred, and conspiratorial activity. "It is necessary to prevent this brain from functioning for 20 years," concluded the Public Prosecutor in his indictment. Gramsci was sentenced to 20 years, 4 months, and 5 days in prison, from which he would only be released in 1935, on parole for health reasons. Finally freed in 1937, he died six days later, at the age of 41.
