In August 2005, as Hurricane Katrina blew in the city of New Orleans has been abandoned by most citizens. But resident Abdulrahman Zeitoun, though his wife and family had gone, refused to leave. For days he traversed an apocalyptic landscape of flooded streets by canoe. But eventually he came to the attention of those 'guarding' this drowned city.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dave Eggers

Dave Eggers was born in Boston in 1970 into a family with four siblings. After the death of his parents in 1991, he moved with his younger brother, of whom he became legal guardian, to California, where he attended Berkeley. An award-winning writer, Eggers has also received several distinctions for his work with communities, notably for his work in Valencia - a non-profit educational project that promotes the linguistic and literary skills of young people aged six to eighteen -; and, more recently, for denouncing the failure of the American administration in the aftermath of Katrina, through his involvement in the Zeitoun case and subsequent account in a book (Quetzal, 2010). Dave Eggers is the founder of the independent record label McSweeney's. He lives with his wife - the writer Vandela Vida - and their two children in the San Francisco Bay Area.
