These lectures are intended to give an outline of Yoga, in order to prepare the student to take up, for practical purposes, the Yoga sutras of Patanjali, the chief treatise on Yoga. I have on hand, with my friend Bhagavan Das as collaborateur, a translation of these Sutras, with Vyasa’s commentary, and a further commentary and elucidation written in the light of Theosophy. To prepare the student for the mastering of that more difficult task, these lectures were designed; hence the many references to Patanjali. They may, however, also serve to give to the ordinary lay reader some idea of the Science of sciences, and perhaps to allure a few towards its study.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Annie Besant

Annie Besant nasceu em 1847, em Londres, Inglaterra e faleceu em 1933, em Madras, índia. Foi uma mulher revolucionária na sua época: teósofa, militante socialista, maçom, ativista e defensora dos direitos das mulheres, uma das maiores oradoras do seu tempo e autora de diversas obras literárias sobre Teosofia. Em 1889, recebeu o convite para escrever uma crítica sobre o livro Doutrina Secreta, de Helena Blavatsky. Após ler a obra, Annie fez uma entrevista com a autora, e então se tornou membro da Sociedade Teosófica. Em 1903, mudou-se para a Índia e em 1908 foi eleita presidente internacional da Sociedade Teosófica, e ficou no cargo até ao seu falecimento. Em 1912, Annie Besant, Marie Russak e James Ingall Wedgwood fundaram a Ordem do Templo da Rosa-Cruz, mas tiveram de suspender as suas atividades por causa dos numerosos problemas originados na Inglaterra durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial. Na Índia, fundou a Liga Nacionalista Indiana. Lá se dedicou à Sociedade Teosófica e ao progresso e liberdade da Índia, sendo a primeira mulher eleita Presidente do Congresso Nacional da Índia.
