C. L. R. James (Cyril Lionel Robert James), também conhecido pelo pseudónimo J. R. Jonhson, nasceu em 1901, em Trinidad e Tobago, e morreu em 1989, em Inglaterra. Foi um historiador, jornalista, romancista e ensaísta influente, tendo os seus trabalhos inspirado vários movimentos políticos de emancipação e várias correntes académicas como os black studies ou os subaltern studies.
