Meet Judge Charlie Walden in the first case of six from the novel, Walden of Bermondsey.

To read the full novel, search: WALDEN OF BERMONDSEY

When Charlie Walden took on the job of Resident Judge of the Bermondsey Crown Court, he was hoping for a quiet life. But he soon finds himself struggling to keep the peace between three feisty fellow judges who have very different views about how to do their job, and about how Charlie should do his.

And as if that’s not enough, there’s the endless battle against the ‘Grey Smoothies’, the humourless grey-suited civil servants who seem determined to drown Charlie in paperwork and strip the court of its last vestiges of civilisation.

No hope of a quiet life then for Charlie, and there are times when his real job - trying the challenging criminal cases that come before him - actually seems like light relief.

If you like Rumpole of the Bailey, you''ll love Walden of Bermondsey

Praise for Walden of Bermondsey

''No one writes with more wit, warmth and insight about the law and its practitioners than Peter Murphy. He has no equal since the great John ''Rumpole'' Mortimer'' - David Ambrose

''Though his exasperation is sometimes palpable, what triumphs over everything is his sense of humour. And it is the humour that makes Walden of Bermondsey such a delightful read. Think of him as what Rumpole would be like if he ever became a judge, and you get some idea of his self-deprecating wit and indomitable stoicism. Add a dash of Henry Cecil for his situation and AP Herbert for the fun he has with the law, and you get a sense of Peter''s literary precedents'' - Paul Magrath

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Peter Murphy

Peter Murphy is a British singer, songwriter, and actor, widely recognized as the "Godfather of the Goth" due to his influence on the post-punk and Gothic movement. Born on July 11, 1957, in Northampton, England, Murphy rose to fame as the lead singer of the iconic band Bauhaus, before embarking on a successful solo career, exploring sounds ranging from alternative to experimental rock.

Murphy began his career with Bauhaus in 1978, a band that defined the sound and aesthetic of gothic rock with their debut single, "Bela Lugosi's Dead." With albums such as In the Flat Field (1980) and Mask (1981), Bauhaus became a landmark of the post-punk movement, standing out for its dark and theatrical sound, combined with Murphy's magnetic presence on stage.

After the band's breakup in 1983, Murphy began his solo career, releasing the album Should the World Fail to Fall Apart (1986). His big break came with Deep (1989), which included the hit "Cuts You Up", widely recognized as one of the best examples of alternative rock at the time. This work highlighted Murphy's ability to blend lyrical introspection with a rich, atmospheric sonority.

Throughout his career, Murphy continued to innovate with albums such as Cascade (1995) and Dust (2002), which explored elements of electronic music, folk and Middle Eastern sounds. In parallel, he reunited with the members of Bauhaus for a series of projects, including the album Go Away White (2008), the band's last studio effort.

Peter Murphy remains an iconic figure in alternative and gothic rock, known for his deep and charismatic voice, as well as his ability to defy artistic expectations. Still active, he continues to release music and tour, keeping alive the essence that made him an underground legend and an essential artist in the history of rock.
