Jeanette Winter nasceu em 1939, em Chicago. Frequentou o Instituto de Arte de Chicago e a Universidade de Iowa
É uma conhecida autora e ilustradora americana e os seus trabalhos de referência são livros infantis, em particular os de mulheres notáveis da história, e em especial as biografias de artistas.
Diversos livros seus foram distinguidos com prémios e menções, nomeadamente na Children's Book Council (NCSS/CBC), Parent's Choice Award, Children's Choice Award, IRA/CBC, e Junior Library Guild Selection.
