The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle was the second of Hugh Lofting''s Doctor Dolittle books to be published, coming out in 1922. It is nearly four times longer than its predecessor and the writing style is pitched at a more mature audience.


Doctor Dolittle meets Tommy Stubbins, the young son of the local cobbler, who becomes his new assistant. Tommy learns how to speak animal languages and becomes involved in the Doctor''s quest to find Long Arrow, the greatest naturalist in the world. This novel takes us to the Mediterranean, South America, and even under the sea. He faces many problems while taking care of these animals.

Hugh Lofting

Hugh John Lofting, nascido a 14 de janeiro de 1886, foi um escritor anglo-americano, formado em Engenharia Civil, que criou uma personagem clássica da literatura infantil, o Doutor Dolittle. O médico que falava com os animais e vivia numa aldeia inglesa surgiu, pela primeira vez, em cartas ilustradas que Lofting enviava aos filhos a partir das trincheiras do Exército Britânico durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial. Após o fim da guerra e antes da publicação do seu primeiro livro, Lofting fixou residência nos Estados Unidos. Faleceu a 26 de setembro de 1947.
