George Meredith

George Meredith nasceu a 12 de fevereiro de 1828, em Portsmouth, Inglaterra. Partindo do seio de um negócio familiar de alfaiates, pôde frequentar um seminário superior local graças a uma pequena fortuna da sua mãe, que morreu quando ele tinha cinco anos, e portanto adotar o papel de um jovem "cavalheiro" em tenra idade. Contudo, mais tarde, devido ao colapso da alfaiataria, tornou-se rapidamente consciente da disparidade entre esta posição e o seu verdadeiro nível socioeconómico. Meredith começou a compor poesia no início dos seus vinte anos e participou na publicação do Monthly Observer, uma revista literária de circulação privada para a qual enviou os seus próprios poemas e artigos críticos. Casou com Mary Nicolls em 1849 após um romance tumultuoso, mas o casamento não foi agradável nem duradouro, devido em parte às difíceis circunstâncias financeiras de Meredith. Não encontrando, de início, sucesso como autor, foi forçado a aceitar emprego como leitor de manuscritos para uma editora e como redator de editoriais e notícias para um jornal provincial. A sua própria escrita tinha de ser feita no tempo livre que lhe restava. Contudo, os seus trabalhos foram pensados para o futuro e centrados na transformação da sociedade.
