Robespierre''s defense of the French Revolution remains one of the most powerful and unnerving justifications for political violence ever written, and has extraordinary resonance in a world obsessed with terrorism and appalled by the language of its proponents. Yet today, the French Revolution is celebrated as the event which gave birth to a nation built on the principles of Enlightenment. So how should a contemporary audience approach Robespierre''s vindication of revolutionary terror? Zizek takes a helter-skelter route through these contradictions, marshaling all the breadth of analogy for which he is famous.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Maximilien Robespierre

Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre (1758-1794) was a French lawyer and politician, and one of the most important figures of the French Revolution.
Following his practice as a lawyer in Arras, his hometown, in April 1789 he became a member of parliament for the Third Estate, representing his native land.
An exceptional orator, his brilliant political career began here.
He joined the Jacobin club, the most radical faction of the revolution, voted for the execution of Louis XVI, and in 1793 created the Committee of Public Safety, which initiated the Reign of Terror.
He was guillotined in 1794 by his enemies.
