ABOUT THE AUTHOR
John Updike
John Updike was born in 1932 in Shillington, Pennsylvania.
He graduated from Harvard University in 1954. He worked at The New Yorker in the 1950s, where he published poems, short stories, essays, and reviews. Updike lived in New England, the setting for most of his books, and in Massachusetts, where he died on January 27, 2009, from lung cancer. He had four children.
He was the author of an extensive body of work, encompassing novels, poetry collections, short stories, essays, and even literary criticism on some of the best contemporary writers.
Updike observed the everyday life around him and frequently led the reader to recognize and question preconceived ideas. From the beginning of his career, existential questions were at the heart of his work.
