On one spring day in the forties of last century, a young man of six and twenty called Boris Andreyitch Vyazovnin arrived at his home, an estate lying in one of the provinces of the central region of Russia. He had just resigned his commission "owing to domestic circumstances," and was intending to look after the management of his land. A praiseworthy idea of course, but Boris Andreyitch had taken it up, as indeed is usually the case, against his will. Every year his income had been falling off while his debts had been increasing.
