Three people receive an invitation to journey to Philadelphia to be present for the reading of a Will in which they are named as beneficiaries.

Emily Thordeaux is anxious to come back to Philadelphia to hear the reading of the late Delilah Neustat's Will and discover her connection to this benefactress, a woman she has never heard of nor met.

Graham Lestor, an Englishman new to America, is puzzled by his invitation but decides to attend the reading of the Will to satisfy his curiosity.
