Michael Collins (16 October 1890 – 22 August 1922) was an Irish revolutionary, soldier and politician who was a leading figure in the early-20th century struggle for Irish independence. During theWar of Independence he was Director of Intelligence of theIrish Republican Army (IRA) and a government minister of the self-declared Irish Republic. He was then Chairman of the Provisional Government of theIrish Free State from January 1922 and commander-in-chief of theNational Army from July until his death in an ambush in August 1922, during the Civil War.

Collins bequeathed to posterity a considerable body of writing: essays, speeches and tracts, articles and official documents in which he outlined plans for Ireland's economic and cultural revival, as well as a voluminous correspondence, both official and personal. Michael Collins

Michael Collins was born in Limerick in 1964 and was educated in Ireland and America. His fiction has garnered international critical acclaim and has been translated into more than 15 languages. His short story collection *The Man Who Dreamt of Lobsters* was named Notable Book of the Year (1993) by the *New York Times*; his short story "The End of the World" received the Pushcart Prize for Best American Short Story, and the *Toronto Globe and Mail* called his most recent collection of short stories "one of the indispensable books of the year." *The Guardians of Truth*, also published by Gradiva, won the Irish Book of the Year award in 2000, was shortlisted for the 2000 Booker Prize and the 2002 IMPAC Literary Prize, and was chosen by critics as Book of the Year by *The London Times* and *The Guardian* in 2000.

Michael Collins holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Illinois at Chicago and currently lives in Seattle.
