Whether deciphering centuries-old family riddles, as in "The Musgrave Ritual", or confronting painful secrets from the past, as in "The Crooked Man" and "The Gloria Scott", Holmes reveals the full complexity of his brilliant mind — and his humanity. Alongside his inseparable companion Dr. Watson, he dives into plots of mysterious disappearances (Silver Blaze), crimes of passion (The Adventure of the Cardboard Box), elaborate frauds (The Stockbroker's Clerk), and moral dilemmas with moving surprises, as in "The Yellow Face". "The collection also marks the first appearance of Mycroft Holmes, in "The Greek Interpreter", and culminates in "The Final Problem" — the unforgettable confrontation with Professor Moriarty, his greatest nemesis.
