Dunya Mikhail trabalhou como jornalista para o Baghdad Observer até ser obrigada a fugir do Iraque. É também uma aclamada poetisa e ativista, cujo trabalho foi já premiado por diversas vezes e reconhecido igualmente com o UN Human Rights Award for Freedom of Writing. Atualmente, a autora vive no Michigan e trabalha na Universidade de Oakland.
