S S Van Dine

S. S. Van Dine (pseudónimo de Willard Huntington Wright) nasceu a 15 de outubro de 1888, em Charlottesville, EUA. Aluno brilhante, estudou em Harvard antes de partir para Paris e Munique, onde prosseguiu a sua formação em artes e letras e iniciou carreira como editor e crítico de arte. Em 1923, na convalescença de uma tuberculose, lê uma série de romances policiais e fica fascinado pelo género. Três anos mais tarde, lança o seu primeiro romance com assinatura S. S. Van Dine, O Caso Benson, que se revela um best-seller imediato. Este será o primeiro de uma série de romances protagonizados por Philo Vance, um detetive amador algo arrogante que privilegia os indícios psicológicos dos casos a que se dedica. Com várias adaptações de obras suas ao cinema, Van Dine torna-se um nome fundamental da literatura policial norte-americana dos anos 20 e 30. Morre a 11 de abril de 1939 em Nova Iorque.
