VLADISLAV VANCURA (1891-1942) foi médico, novelista, contista, cronista, dramaturgo, guionista e ensaísta. O «poeta da ficção» – como era apelidado – lutou incansavelmente contra o nazismo, tendo morrido às mãos da Gestapo durante a ocupação nazi da República Checa. Tido como um dos grandes artífices da literatura checa moderna e um dos maiores escritores europeus da sua época, tornou-se conhecido com Marketá Lazarová, uma novela histórica inspirada nos seus antepassados, cavaleiros da nobreza rural checa, publicada pela primeira vez em 1931 e que depressa se transformou num bestseller.
