Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. For the purpose of these addresses it must suffice to look at certain aspects of primitive Church history in their general outline. The field is very wide, and we can only traverse parts of it: and even in regard to the sub jects on which we can dwell, a full discussion of many details would be out of place, would more than fill up the time at our disposal. Our aim must be to form or to recover such ideas of the Church life of those distant first centuries as may afterwards admit of further illustrations, and may not require to be cast aside as determined by an erroneous standpoint.
