Dark, weird, psychologically complex, Hawthorne’s short fiction continues to fascinate readers. Brenda Wineapple has made a generous selection of Hawthorne’s stories, including some of his best-known tales as well as other, less-often anthologized gems.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nathaniel Hawthorne

He was born in Salem, USA, in 1804. At the age of four, he was orphaned of his father, a captain in the navy. In 1825, he finished his studies at Bowdoin University. Three years later, he published his first novel, Fanshawe, which he rejected. In 1845, he was appointed Customs Inspector, having been dismissed, for political reasons, four years later. Between 1853 and 1857, he was consul in Liverpool. Before returning to the USA and dedicating himself exclusively to writing, he lived for a year and a half in Italy. He died in 1864. Among his works, the novels The House of the Seven Gables (1851) and The Marble Faun (1860) stand out, as well as the collections of short stories, Twice-Told Tales (1837), which made him known to the public, or Mosses from an Old Manse (1846).
