ABOUT THE AUTHOR

John Donne

Nasce em Londres, em 1573, numa família católica. Estudou primeiro em Oxford, mais tarde em Cambridge. Em 1572 vem até aos Açores, na expedição do Conde de Essex. Secretário de Lord Egerton, apaixona-se e casa secretamente com a sobrinha deste, Anne More, em 1601. O pai dela manda-o prender. Com a carreira arruinada, o poeta vai desempenhando diversos cargos menores até aceitar ser ordenado padre, em 1615. Nesta altura renega toda a sua poesia profana. Seis anos mais tarde é nomeado Deão da Catedral de S. Paulo, posto que ocupa até à sua morte em 1631. No final da vida, a fama advém-lhe dos poemas metafísicos, mas principalmente dos sermões.
