Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The editor of The North American Review has asked me to reply to an article recently printed in its pages criticising the College of Journalism which I have endowed as part of Columbia University. In complying with his request 1 have enlarged the scope of the reply to include all other criticisms and misgivings, many honest, some shallow, some based on misunderstanding, but the most representing only prejudice and ignorance. If my comment upon these criticisms shall seem to be diffuse and perhaps repetitious, my apology is that - alas! - I am compelled to write by voice, not pen, and to revise the proofs by ear, not eye - a somewhat difficult task.
