Dan Wells nasceu no Utah, nos EUA, em 1977. Os pais eram leitores ávidos e apreciadores de ficção científica e fantástica; Dan viu A Guerra das Estrelas aos quatro meses de idade e o pai leu-lhe O Hobbit aos seis anos. Foi então que decidiu ser escritor e passou grande parte da juventude a ler, a escrever e a aprender tudo o que conseguia acerca de Literatura - de Victor Hugo a Tolkien, de Dostoiévski a Neil Gaiman. Viajou bastante, trabalhou como copywriter para publicidade e escreveu críticas de videojogos e de ficção científica para publicações especializadas.
