ABOUT THE AUTHOR
John Bunyan
John Bunyan nasceu em 1628, em Elstow, a sul de Bedford. De família paupérrima, teve pouca educação formal, mas aprendeu a ler e a devorar os romances medievais, em que bravos cavaleiros enfrentavam dragões e monstros. Na juventude era conhecido pelos muitos impropérios que proferia e por dedicar os domingos à dança e ao desporto, o que era malvisto pelos puritanos. Aos 16 anos, no auge da Guerra Civil, juntou-se ao exército. Certa vez foi “retirado” do seu posto, e o soldado que o substituiu foi baleado mortalmente, o que Bunyan viu como uma intervenção divina que mudaria a sua vida – deu um novo sentido à sua fé, tornando-se um pregador de excelência que todos queriam ouvir. Porém, acabou preso por pregar sem permissão, tendo passado mais de 12 anos no cárcere – um dos mais longos períodos registados pelo mesmo motivo. Apesar das miseráveis condições das prisões
da época, foi aí que Bunyan escreveu grande parte da sua obra. Após reconquistar a liberdade, dedicou-se a escrever e a pregar. Faleceu em 1688, tendo deixado escritas mais de 60 obras, entre as quais The Pilgrim’s Progress, considerado o segundo livro mais relevante da História do cristianismo.
